Now available for free download in the video iPod format are the originals of "Night of the Living Dead" and "Nosferatu," plus the 1932 "A Farewell to Arms" - the one with Gary Cooper.

Downloadable films are at PublicDomainTorrents.com, which offers over 500 free and legal movies for download.

Many have also been formatted for the video iPod. The films are mainly B-movies, with titles like "Creature from the Haunted Seas." Don't miss "Plan 9 from Outer Space," the Ed Wood classic, which is generally considered the worst movie Hollywood ever made.

San Francisco - Wired News' "Cult of Mac" blog this week drew attention to a site called PublicDomainTorrents.com, which hosts over 500 free and legal movies for download -- most of which have also been formatted for the video iPod.

The films are mainly B-movies, with titles like "Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women," but also include George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead," F.W. Murnau's "Nosferatu," and the 1932 screen adaptation of Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms," starring Gary Cooper.

This is great...a repository of free classic and b-movies to download!

And the best feature is these movies are in PDA/smartphone/PPC and Ipod versions.

Plenty of moving pictures to keep you occupied while waiting for that bus!

The movies are downloaded via the bitorrent medium. BitTorrent is a fast, powerful, and spyware-free way to download large files online. Instead of downloading files from a central server, you download from other people who are also downloading the file.

Evidently there are a lot of old movies that are in the public domain now, and the folks at publicdomaintorrents.com have put them online as bittorrent files for free download.

This is a cool and legitimate use of Bittorrent technology. For those of you new to the show, Bittorrent is a peer to peer file sharing technology that allows you to download bits of a show from a bunch of people at the same time.

Publicdomaintorrents.com has the shows sorted by content - from Action/Adventure to comedy to drama and more.

I love the tagline at the top, it says “Movies that made History…Sort of…”

These aren’t your top run movies in general, but some look pretty interesting. I’m downloading a Sherlock Holmes movie for my iPod called “Dressed to Kill”.

I did find “Night of the Living Dead” on there, maybe that will be more popular and come down faster! Anyway, interesting site, check it out at publicdomaintorrents.com.

I stumbled across this while reading news on Lifehacker. This website has a bunch of public domain videos available for download via Bittorrent.

They have quite the eclectic collection which ranges from old cartoons (Popeye, Betty Boop, Superman) to Sci-Fi classics like the Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe serial.

Also available are some Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello and the kids from Our Gang (The Little Rascals for those who might not know.)

Videos are available in high resolution DivX or in MPEG-4 formatted for iPod and Playstation Portable.
