What they are saying on the Blogs

  Wired Magazine -

Public domain Torrents has links to more than 500 movies in the public domain available for download via BitTorrent. Most are compatible with the video iPod.

There's a lot of silent-era stuff, but also a rich vein of kitsch trash, including clunkers from Ed Wood (Plan 9 from Outer Space), George Romero (Night of the Living Dead) and a Russian psychotronic/cult/camp sci-fi oddity called Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women.

A collection of torrents from sources in the public domain. Old Tom and Jerry cartoons, Flash Gordon serials, martial arts flicks, Bower Boy adventures etc. Before television was completely homogenized many of these things were regular fodder for non-prime time Saturday and Sunday television. The Horror section will satiate my need for my childhood "Creature Features" on WXON 20 in Detroit (with samples of Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin as the intro music).

Hey I saw this on Sarah In Tampa the other day and I must say that it rocks. Basically the site publicdomaintorrents.com hosts (yup you guessed it) torrents of movies that have fallen into the public domain.

Now I can amuse my self (legally) with Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbukle movies! I think this is a great idea and a great way to keep classic cinema alive.

Yeah I can't believe I saw this on DVD the other day for like £15.

That's a lot for even a current movie, let alone an old public domain movie that's available to download from several internet sites, publicdomaintorrents.com.

This place is awesome. These are all films which have been released to the public domain and are free to use and distribute. Tons of classic stuff in there like Flash Gordon and Plan 9 From Outer Space, famed to be "the worst film ever made", The Little Shop of Horrors, etc. All categorised with PDA and iPod sized vids (in addition to regular divx) for a lot of the films.

We're publicdomaintorrent.com addicts.

Thumbs up strictly as a statment against RIAA assertions that torrent itself is evil. There is a ton of media out there like these Public Domain torrents of Classic and Cheesy B-Movie. The copyright of these movies has expired so you are free to share them.

This might be another huge opportunity for Creative Commons to help disambiguate/authenticate status of newly-expired old-world copyrighted media. Wanna see pictures of who we are?

PublicDomainTorrents.com is a decent resource for torrents of classic and B-movies in which the copyright has expired (public domain media)

This will be useful for my ECMP 355 course where students perform video editing/mixing. Using sites like this as a resource also help to explain that the Bit Torrent protocol is not to be equated.

Free Movies To Go!

www.publicdomaintorrents.com, offers free movies suitable for viewing on handheld devices, including the new iPod, smartphones and PDAs.

More than 500 films are available. The movies are in the public domain, meaning their copyrights have lapsed, and can be shared legally.

You won't find anything near a new release, but you will find such, ahem, classics as "Plan 9 from Outer Space," the Ed Wood sci-fi tale widely regarded as the worst movie of all time. The 1959 movie is so bad it's become something of a cult favorite for its unintended comedy.

I just discovered two web sites that have public domain (that means no copyright restrictions) classic and B movies available for downloads. Since I just discovered them today, I haven’t checked them out yet.

Both sites, however, have good reviews in my professional sources.

Films that are in the public domain, free to download. And before you get put off by the fact that they're free and public domain and so therefore must be crap, hold your horses...

There's some absolute classics on there, most notably Nosferatu, Metropolis, Little Shop Of Horrors and Night Of The Living Dead. Also plenty for fans of terrible films - Plan 9 From Outer Space, Reefer Madness, Robot Monster and old cinema serials, including Flash Gordon.

Also worthy of note are the Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy (and also Stan Laurel on his own), Keystone Cops, Little Rascals, Fatty Arbuckle and Charlie Chaplin films. Oh, Betty Boop, Popeye and Tom & Jerry, too.

Basically one of those places with legal free torrents.

This one in particular has rounded up some classic films and b-movies. Equally as brilliant, a lot of them are available in ipod and pda formats. So if you missed out on seeing The General, Nosferatu, Metropolis et al, now’s your chance.

...And so it was a pleasant surprise to trip across four Wontner and Owen films online in a BitTorrent archive, free for download in several different formats and qualities, including iPod-ready video.

They can be found in the Mystery section of site called PublicDomainTorrents.com.

If you’re interested in downloading some of these little treasures, point your favourite BitTorrent client (I use Azureus) to PublicDomainTorrents and catch Reginald Owen in A Study in Scarlet (1933, and bearing no resemblance whatsoever to the novel), and Wontner in The Sign of Four (1932), The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes (1935), and Murder at the Baskervilles (1937, a.k.a., Silver Blaze). There are also four of Universal’s Rathbone/Bruce films from the 1940’s, namely Dressed to Kill, Terror by Night, The Woman in Green, and Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon. You may have noticed the latter four films offered cheaply from many different distributors, and the reason is elementary: no copyrights = no royalties.
